Animation Workshop for Kids!
12:30 to 1:30pm (for ages 9-12)
3:00 to 4:00pm (for ages 8 and under)
Come and experience the magic of animation and see your drawings come to life! Learn the basics of classical and stop action animation and the fundamental skills that all the classic animated films are based upon from animator Rowland Cooney. This is a beginner workshop and you will get a glimpse into the art of animation. You will be making your own flipbook that you can take home and continue to build upon, using the skills you have learned!
A great addition to this film festival is the chance for attendees to participate in animation workshops. Seating at the workshops is limited to 20 participants. There is no other fee beyond the normal festival ticket for the workshops. Signing up for the workshops as soon as possible after purchasing tickets to the event is strongly recommended, email: info@FrederickFilmFest.com with the student's name and age.

Rowland Cooney’s interest in animation began when he was four years old and fell in love with Ariel from Walt Disney's The Little Mermaid. Surprisingly, the relationship actually did go somewhere: It developed into a fascination with the arts of 2-D animation and story-telling, and a passion for the art of Stop-Motion animation. Which, naturally, led to teaching himself how to sculpt.
His sculptures have won many awards and contests, and have been featured in magazines, on the front page of DeviantArt.com, and on one of the most popular blogs on the Internet, Kotaku. When he’s not doing freelance commission work for wedding cake toppers and chess sets--through his side business White Tiger Miniatures--he’s teaching stop-motion animation in the Kids on Campus program at Frederick Community College. In those twenty two years he’s come a long way, but he still has a soft spot for Ariel.
Early evening features:
For the festival early evening features, the MIKFF is proud and happy to present the two Oscar-winning animated Wallace and Gromit films “The Wrong Trousers” and “A Close Shave.” The films, featuring the creations of Nick Park and produced by Aardman Animations in the UK, are two of the most highly acclaimed animated films in history. The films feature the two quirky stars, Wallace, the inventor, and Gromit, his trusty (and much smarter) canine companion. The Wallace and Gromit films are known for their dry humor, incredibly detailed deptictions of mayhem, and their innovative use of stop-motion animation. The animation technique for these films is highly labor intensive. A second of film constitutes 24 separate frames and the daily production speed on the films is roughly 30 frames per day of production. Just over a SECOND OF FILM! A 30-minute film is 1800 seconds...over 43,000 frames of film! The work pays off splendedly, however, as one gets lost in the frantic chaos that is the life of Wallace and Gromit.
